Ethiopian vs Mozambique Paraiba Tourmaline
Mozambique is the best-documented African source of copper-bearing tourmaline. Ethiopian material is far less documented. Comparing the two is useful, but only if the difference in evidence is kept in view: statements about Mozambique rest on published studies, while statements about Ethiopia remain provisional.

What is the main difference between Ethiopian and Mozambique Paraiba?
The main difference today is documentation. Mozambique copper-bearing tourmaline is well studied and widely traded; Ethiopian copper-bearing tourmaline is reported but not yet comprehensively documented in peer-reviewed literature.
| Attribute | Ethiopia | Mozambique | Brazil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geographic origin | East Africa. Specific localities to be documented with verified sources. | East Africa; deposits most often cited in Nampula Province (Alto Ligonha pegmatite district). | North-eastern Brazil; the original Paraíba deposits and later finds in Rio Grande do Norte. |
| Typical colour range | Blue, green and blue-green tourmaline reported in the trade; systematic colour documentation in progress. | Blue, greenish blue, green, violet to purple; frequently heated to modify colour. | Neon blue, greenish blue, green and violet; the reference point for “neon” saturation. |
| Copper-bearing material | Must be confirmed stone by stone through chemical analysis. Colour alone is not evidence. | Copper-bearing material documented in published literature. | Copper-bearing material documented since the original discovery. |
| Market history | Comparatively recent and less documented; this site aims to build a verified record. | Entered the market in the 2000s and now supplies much of the Cu-bearing tourmaline trade. | Introduced to the international market around 1989; the origin of the trade name. |
| Rarity | Not yet quantified. Production volumes are not reliably published. | Rare in fine qualities; larger clean stones occur more often than from Brazil. | Very limited historic production; fine large stones are exceptionally rare. |
| Origin determination | Depends on each laboratory’s reference collection for Ethiopian material, which may be limited. | Laboratories may offer an origin opinion based on trace-element chemistry and reference data. | Laboratories may offer an origin opinion; Brazilian origin often carries a market premium. |
How do the geological settings compare?
Mozambique copper-bearing tourmaline is generally described as recovered from secondary (alluvial/eluvial) deposits associated with granitic pegmatites. The geological setting of Ethiopian material has not yet been documented on this site.
Do they look different?
Not reliably. Stones from different sources overlap in colour and clarity. Appearance cannot establish origin, which is why laboratories rely on trace-element chemistry and reference data.
Mozambique material is known for producing comparatively larger clean stones and a wide colour range, including violet to purple stones that are commonly heated toward blue. Whether Ethiopian material shows comparable sizes and colours needs systematic documentation.
Can a laboratory tell them apart?
Laboratories compare trace-element patterns (for example ratios involving gallium, lead and other elements) against reference samples. Separation is often possible for well-characterised sources, but for less-documented sources it may not be.

Which is more valuable?
There is no established market benchmark for Ethiopian material. Mozambique stones have an established trade history. In both cases, individual quality and documentation outweigh origin alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mozambique Paraiba the same as Ethiopian Paraiba?
They are different reported sources. Both may qualify for the Paraíba variety name if analysis confirms copper-bearing tourmaline meeting laboratory criteria.
Can Ethiopian material be sold as Mozambique?
Origin should only be stated as determined by a recognised laboratory. Misrepresenting origin is a disclosure issue regardless of direction.
