Treatment of Ethiopian Paraiba Tourmaline
Two treatments are relevant to copper-bearing tourmaline: heating to modify colour and clarity enhancement of fissures. They differ greatly in detectability and in their effect on value.

Why is copper-bearing tourmaline heated?
Heating can reduce the violet or purple component caused by Mn³⁺, producing a cleaner blue or green. It is common and generally considered stable, but often cannot be proven.
What is clarity enhancement?
Oils or resins are introduced into surface-reaching fissures to make them less visible. It is detectable with magnification and spectroscopy and should always be disclosed with its degree.
How should treatment appear on a report?
Reports typically state whether clarity enhancement is present and its extent, and may note that heating cannot be determined. Absence of a heating statement should not be read as proof of no heating.
